Match Report – 03/10/21 – Vitality 2nd Round Qualifiers v Westfields FC Women

For the second qualifying round of the FA Cup, Shrewsbury Town headed south to play Westfields FC Women to try and advance to the final qualifying round. This was to be the first fixture for the women that would take place on a grass pitch as previously all fixtures have been on 3G pitches.
The match saw all sorts of conditions throughout the 90, from strong win and heavy rain to extremely bright sun spells, but the team played well for the entirety of the game and saw themselves scoring 6 goals against Westfields and only 1 goal against the Blue and Amber team.
Kick-Off
Within the first minute a long shot it tried at the Westfields goal that’s slightly wide of the goal but appears to rattle the Westfields defence.
A good attack from Town leads to a cross across the goal but is unable to be connected with a Shrewsbury player so the ball goes out for a goal kick.
A low shot for Town crawls across the goal, the keeper is beaten but it’s just wide of the goal.
The ball is swapping possession back and forth with loose passes forcing tough touches on both teams.
Corner for Shrewsbury it’s played short allowing a one-two and then crossed in, it’s to the back post but the header is missed.
Throwing deep in the Westfield half leads to a corner for Shrewsbury, the ball goes low and across the goal, it’s fumbled around the goal on its way but no one is able to touch it in to score.
A throw in for Westfields deep in Shrewsbury half is defended well allowing a goal kick for town.
A tackle in the Westfield half plays Zoe Child through one on one but it’s saved by the keepers feet.
Paris takes a long shot around 30 yards out the keeper has to palm it up but collects the second time.
Paris tries a long shot again from a one two with Zoe Child and the shot curls high and right, but the shot is over the keeper and into the back of the net, Town go 1-0 up in Impressive fashion.

Some nice build up play near the Westfields box leads to Shannon McShane taking a shot from distance but the shot flies over the bar, Shrewsbury finding plenty of space to shoot outside of the box so far this half.
An attack from Westfields is defended well, giving Town a goal kick stopping Westfields attacking momentum and giving Shrewsbury possession again which they’ve controlled well so far.
Corner is played short for Town, and then whipped into the box, but it’s not ended up at a Town player and Westfields reset play.
Through balls are tried for town but the runs aren’t connecting. All attacks are in favour of the Blue and Amber team so far this game.
A well worked piece of play from Shrewsbury sees the ball coming across the goal which leads to Paris finishing a loose ball that she’s able to bury for her brace

Start of second half
Shrewsbury get a corner early into the half Leanne Rimmer tries a header but the keeper is just able to get ahead of the header and grab the ball.
Shannon Mcshane collects a loose ball and dribbles past one player, then holding off another player, she blasts a shot from distance and its straight over the keeper into the goal.

Phoebe Carter unfortunately misses the ball in goal allowing an easy tap in finish for Westfields.

A corner for Shrewsbury sees an open header on the edge of the box for Leanne, the header is towards the bottom right corner but sees the keeper collect the header.
Through ball for Libby leads plays her through on goal, she’s able to compose herself and delivers a clean finish into the bottom left corner.
4-1 – 59’ – Libby Veitch
A wide through ball for Zoe Child plays her down the win, she’s able to cut in slightly which leads to a shot from across the goal but it’s just wide.
All attacking threats coming from the hands of Shrewsbury forcing Westfields to be on the defence completely, also with most of possession in the hands of Town as Westfields look tired.
Possession for Shrewsbury, allot of through balls attempted but none leading to chances at goal for Town as they’re just misplaced and turn over possession.
An interception from Liv Minshall plays Maddie Jones through on goal it’s shot low and goes under the keeper but drags wide of the goal.
A through ball from Maddie Jones plays Zoe Child wide, she tries her luck with a shot again and this time she’s able to tuck it in the bottom left corner.

A header from Liv Minshall plays Maddie through, she is able to dribble it well to take it past the keeper wide but when shot at the open goal the defender stops the shot.
Zoe Child is played through once again, she finds herself in a good position and decides to take the shot, this time the finish is slotted home for her brace

For the remainder of the game Shrewsbury find themselves with a couple more chances at goal. But don’t amount to anything. Possession stays in the hands of Town as they’re able to see out the game to the final whistle, securing advancement into the third qualifying round of the Vitality FA Cup.
