Shrewsbury head away for the third time in a row to take on Albrighton Ladies in the quarter final of the Tom Farmer Cup

Kick-Off

Shrewsbury would look to put pressure on Albrighton from early in the game to put themselves ahead as quickly as possible. Albrighton though stopping Salop in their tracks with an organised backline and high pressing tactic preventing Town from being able to build up any play.

Albrighton using their physicality to their advantage, dispossessing Shrewsbury and creating opportunities to attack. The defence of Town keeping composed on the rough terrain forcing Albrighton when they do make a break into tough positions forcing shots from distance that don’t trouble Phoebe in goal.

Attacks would come against the hosts as long balls would create opportunities for the visitors, when both teams had to race for the ball chances began to be created with the speed of Shrewsbury’s forwards outdoing Albrighton’s defence.

In the last few fixtures since the Christmas break Salop’s set-pieces have stood out in creating dangerous opportunities to score, this would be the same throughout this game as Abbie McShane’s delivery was pivotal in the creation of quality chances for Shrewsbury.

Albrighton keeping the game level for a significant amount of the first half, it would be the delivery of a free-kick from Shrewsbury that would break the deadlock though. As a curled free-kick troubled the home team’s goalkeeper who fumbles the ball from the save, but quick-thinking Captain Vikki Owen was ready and jumped on the loose ball putting Salop ahead and now scoring 2 goals in 2 games.

Half-Time – Albrighton 0-1 Shrewsbury Town Women

A similar performance to the first half would commence with Albrighton staying composed at the backline and stopping any Shrewsbury attack in their tracks.

The momentum of the game slowing down as allot of possession changes and clearances for throw ins causing Salop to not be able to build up a drive at goal. It would only be when a long ball is played to Maddie Jones whose speed couldn’t be matched that the momentum would change. Some impressive ball control in a high-pressure situation and perfectly placed cross to Shannon McShane at the back post meant that Salop would extend their lead 2 goals to 0.

Unfortunately, another opportunity wouldn’t be converted as the Town players struggled to convert. What Town could take away from this game though was the impressive composure to prevent Albrighton from creating any quality chances at goal.
