Match Report – 14/11/21 – Shrewsbury Town v Lye Town Vitality FA Cup First Round
Following a tough battle to qualify into the proper rounds of the FA Cup against Wem, Shrewsbury weren’t going into the first round with an easy fixture. Lye Town were another opposition who were in a higher league to Shrewsbury, and would keep the Town players on their toes for the 90 minutes. Lye so far this season with three wins and two losses in the league. Town knew that this would be another battle to advance to the next round and their expectations were met.

Immediately Lye looked like the aggressors in the match, with possession being held by the visitors in Shrewsbury’s half. Shrewsbury having to make defensive clearances to prevent Lye from breaking through on goal within the first couple minutes.
7’ A corner for Lye sees the ball crossed well into the box, Vikki Owen heads the danger clear winning an impressive aerial battle. From the cleared header Town find themselves in the counter attack, with Maddie Jones played through on goal but the flag is raised saving Lye from the danger of Towns top goal scorer this season.
8’ Lye win a free kick deep in Town’s half, it’s whipped towards goal but no Lye players to attack leaving Vikki free to clear the ball, Lye creating plenty of dangerous chances for Town.
10’ Lye on the attack down the wing of the Shrewsbury half, the Lye attacker finding the space to get a cross off, it’s played into a good area of the box and flicked on by an attacker leading to the ball crawling into the bottom left corner of the goal.

14’ Free kick deep in lye’s half on the edge of the box for Town there first set piece of the game, it’s played across the box but no one is able to attack it, allowing Lye to not worry about the threat Shrewsbury created.
16’ – A good run of play from Lye sees a ball through on goal, a shot is tried but is wide of the goal, The Town defence having to deal with the danger of the fast attackers of the Lye team.
21’ Good build up play from town has Maddie played through down the left side of the pitch her speed allowing her to create space and opportunities for herself, she tries for a shot at close range but is blocked by the Lye defender and cleared for a corner
22’ Town not allowing play to leave the lye half now as they look determined to score their equaliser, another attack sees the ball fumbled by the Lye goalkeeper, Town players try to get the shot off but are unable to find the loose ball.
24’ Great build up from all the way at the back by Town seeing connected passed all the way from Phoebe in goal to the attackers, Libby Veitch with some impressive footwork, turns her Lye player to create herself space to be able to play a pass to Zoe Child who now through on goal draws out the keeper and goes for goal, but the shot is just wide.
25’ Lye with another cross which sees a header towards goal, but an outstretched Phoebe in goal saves town form conceding another, a very impressive save from the Shrewsbury goalkeeper.
Town creating good chances in the game but unable to connect the final pass to play the attackers through on goal, but as the game goes on Town are looking a more relaxed and composed team.
37’ Town using their fast attackers to trouble the Lye defence, Libby plays a ball through to Maddie who looks to be through on goal, she is fouled for the advantage but play continues as Libby picks up the loose ball, Lye tackle again to turnover possession but no foul called from the advantage.
38’ Free-kick in Lye’s half for town, it’s into the box and brought down by Lily Mcshane who finds herself with a second of space in the box but before she can get a shot off and Lye defender does well to clear the danger. Immediate counter attack by Lye sees a good string of passes creating a chance at goal that forces Phoebe to make another good save.
41’ – Shrewsbury looking composed on the ball and creating a good run of play, Libby with the ball with one defender to beat, she manages to get past her player and fires of a shot that easily finds itself in the bottom left corner a lovely goal to equalise the game.

Town troubling Lye’s backline more as the speed of the town attackers seem to be worrying them forcing rough challenges, Lye looking to see out to the end of the half to halt Town’s momentum that they have created for themselves.

49’ Shrewsbury with attack after another to start the half, Lily with an open shot but it’s over the bar. Before lye can breathe, Town are attacking again and this time Libby is through and looking to get her second, the shot looks good but again is just over the bar, Town creating very good chances early in the second half.
52’ An impressive through pass from Lily to Maddie. Maddie knocks the pass on ahead of the defenders and with her speed gets herself in a good position, she tries the shot but it’s wide and into the side netting.
59’ A slip up from Town has a Lye player through on goal, she goes to pass to her teammate but the flag is raised, Shrewsbury let off easy there as Lye could have had an easy goalscoring opportunity.
62’ Maddie with a great pass has Libby through on goal, she knocks it past her defender and has to race to the ball against the keeper who manages to slide in to save the ball.

64’ A cross played into the box, Zoe outstretches to knock it in but just can’t reach and it’s cleared for a corner, Shrewsbury still creating the best chances so far in this half.
66’ – A poor pass played in the town back half, sees Lye with a chance whilst the keeper is out of her goal, but an offside pass saves town from a poor goal to concede.
69’ Corner for lye, the goalkeeper is blocked from coming out but no foul called and an open header puts Lye ahead again, it’s a tough goal to concede and looks to have demoralised town, objections being raised for a foul on the keeper but the goal stands.

72’ From a deep throw-in town control the play, finding Abbie Mcshane on the edge with space, she tries her luck and fires towards goal but the shot is over the bar.

78’ Maddie finds herself dribbling in the box, she tried a shot from an awkward angle but it is towards goal forcing the keeper to make a save, Town so far this game has been unable to break the Lye defence to get many clean chances through on goal.
90+1 – free kick for Town in lye’s half this looks to be Shrewsbury last good chance at goal, the kick is shot towards goal but ends up wide of the post, Lye now with possession again playing slow and letting the clock run out, with some hold up play in the corner of the pitch, Lye sees themselves through to the second round of the FA Cup and Shrewsbury knocked out.
