With heavy downpour from the offset, it was set out to be a tough mental game for both teams having to deal with the conditions in an important cup game to earn advancement to the second round.

KICK-OFF

It was important in conditions like these to get the lead in the game as quickly as possible, with motivation levels low in the abysmal weather, putting a team behind would basically seal the game instantly.

Instantly as soon as the whistle is blown Salop attacking with vigour, it pays off though as within 2 minutes from kick-off Lily McShane gives Town the lead after finishing a loose ball from a save by the Walsall keeper giving the early lead Shrewsbury were looking for.

GOAL – 2′ – Lily McShane

The rest of the half became a progressive struggle for either side with the weather continuing to worsen, strong winds going against Salop making the attacking chances more of a struggle to convert with the strong wind taking the balls momentum in the air.

Walsall stopping from any other goals going in within the first half.

Half-Time Shrewsbury 1–0 Walsall

In the second half the weather went from bad to torrential, with heavy winds and extreme rain the challenge of the second half would be real test for both teams. With weather conditions so bad the ref asks both managers if he wants the game to continue, it really is a tough game to highlight impressive play but from some impressive build-up play Shrewsbury were able to create a strong attack that leads to Captain Vikki Owen picking up herself a goal solidifying the win for Salop.

GOAL – 78′ – Vikki Owen

The second half wouldn’t go without plenty of chances at goal though, with shots bombarding the Walsall goalkeeper who displayed excellent goalkeeping ability to prevent any other goals from being scored.

A true display of grit from both teams to battle against the extreme elements and continue throughout the game to see it out to the final whistle.

FULL-TIME Shrewsbury 2-0 Walsall
