The two Shropshire teams battled it out for the whole 90 minutes in a exiting display of football that saw great finishes, tough challenges and moments of individual brilliance. It was the visiting side though that went home with all three points after putting 4 goals past the home team’s keeper.
Kick-Off
As this was to be the second fixture between Shrewsbury and Telford and the first one going the way of Salop in an impressive 3-0 victory, it was clear that Telford would be looking to get revenge against the high-flying side on their home term (Telford).
From the outset of the game Telford were clearly composed and ready with a game-plan as no significant chances were created by either side, with impressive defensive displays from either side in preventing chances at the goal.
Shrewsbury facilitating most of the possession with Abbie McShane winning the team possession plenty of times throughout the match and the defensive backline working the ball around Telford to find the attacking opportunities. But the attacking chances did begin to be created, with players like Libby Veitch holding up play in the attacking third with the assisted help from midfielders Lily McShane and Paris Schofield they were able to work well together in finding the forwards throughout the game to begin getting shots off at goal.
The first goal would come about from a Shrewsbury corner where after initially being cleared be Telford defenders it would fall to Libby in space outside the box who took her chance from distance, the shot catches the keeper off guard as it soars over her and into the goal giving town the lead.
Not long after the deadlock was broken another attacking chance is created, with Milly Potter running deep into Telford’s half from the left-back position she manages to create an opportunity for forward Zoe Child to press the Telford defence which causes the ball to fall to Lily McShane in an open shooting opportunity which she converts confidently.
Half-Time and the visitors lead 2 goals to Telford 0
Telford didn’t allow the first half’s result demotivate them though as they came back at Shrewsbury with the same level of energy and press as they did in the first half, a testament to their desire to get back into the game.
Shrewsbury throughout the match causing danger to the Telford defence with their set-pieces, throughout the match they’d have multiple corners which saw headers closely go over the bar or just be cleared by a defender. It seemed inevitable that one of these chances would be converted.
It would be the Captain Vikki Owen who would see herself score from one of these corners as her near post header finds its way past the Telford defence and into the goal giving Town now a 3-0 lead against the hosts.
This goal looking to be the demotivator for Telford whose drive looks to have lowered, this would be all the clearer when sheer minutes after the captain’s goal, substitute Maddie Jones would put another goal past the home team and putting the nail in the coffin solidifying Shrewsbury’s victory as everything is drawn from the Telford side.
Shrewsbury would see the rest of the game without converting another chance even though quality opportunities were created. An extremely impressive away performance from Salop with not a single player letting down the team and all shining in their roles.
Full-Time and Shrewsbury go home with all three points and improve on their last win against Telford.
Player breakdown:
Phoebe Carter in goal doing what she does best week in week out with her pin-point precision to distribute the ball and keeping her call-in high-pressure scenarios.
Grace Layton and then Anna France later on in the game doing an excellent job of stopping any danger from Telford’s number 7 on the left wing and supporting attacks down the left side.
Leanne Rimmer, Vikki Owen and Brogan Cook all player a vital role in stopping any danger coming to Phoebe in goal but also playing an important role in starting the build-up play after gaining possession, their composure on the ball in high pressure situation being key in the team maintaining possession.
Similarly, to the right side, Milly Potter and Lottie Etterley being pivotal in multiple chances created that lead to goals in today’s game and the dedication to recover from a high position on the pitch if possession was turned over.
Abbie McShane was very impressive in her ability to win back possession and find players in spaces for passes, and in her support on offensive and defensive duties.
Lily McShane and Paris Schofield both with strong performances in the midfield, controlling the ball and either finding space to attack with, playing great passes forward to the attackers or going back and continuing to control possession and not lose the team the ball.
Libby Veitch playing a key role today, not just by breaking the deadlock and scoring for the team but also being the key middle player in the final third of the pitch helping to play the final pass to the forwards allowing chances at goal to be created.
Zoe Child, Shannon McShane, Maddie Jones and Mia Pugh had an important role to play in the game, a clear high line pressing style of play was being used by Salop and all four players did exactly what they were instructed to do, creating difficulties for the defenders and pressure on the goalkeeper.
