After coming back from the Christmas break Town were to face Wyrley away from home for their first league fixture back from the Christmas break. When the two teams last met Shrewsbury hosted Wyrley in a game that saw Shrewsbury score 10 past the visiting team.

Kick-Off

The game started very evenly with either team holding possession and pressing oppositions. Wyrley looking like a more aggressive side pressing harder than in their previous meeting. But Shrewsbury finding how to counter this different play-style from Wyrley and begin what will end up being the constant chance creation at the home teams’ goal. The first chance coming from the attacking speed of forward Maddie Jones who manages to create gaps in Wyrley’s defence. Being paired alongside Zoe Child who equally begins creating difficulties for the home sides defence, it was inevitable that goals would start being converted.

It was a pass to Maddie Jones down the righthand side from the defence that brought on the first goal as she was able to break free from the defenders to then be one on one with the keeper, with a calm and composed finish she puts Salop ahead.

Throughout the game spark of impressive individual ability were put on show by multiple players, from the aerial winning ability of Leanne Rimmer, the attacking full back roles that Grace Layton and Milly Potter were executing in spectacular fashion or the ball winning role Abbie McShane was playing in the midfield. Yet it was Paris Schofield with a goal no-one saw coming when she decides to take on two defenders with some agile footwork before taking a shot at the near post which is out of reach for the Wyrley goalie.

In a repeat of the first goal, Maddie Jones is found with a pass down the wing of the pitch (this time the left side), she brings the ball into the box before squaring the ball across the goal where Zoe Child is able to easily finish the pass making the lead three for town before the half-time whistle.

The second half saw a slower pace to the game, Wyrley looking like they’re struggling to find the motivation to have the same energy of press that they started the game with, with most of the possession taking place in the Wyrley half and the Salop defence and midfield controlling the possession.

The scoresheet would open up again though with a corner from Shrewsbury being played short before being crossed back into the box where substitute Shannon McShane is found after the home teams’ keeper misses the punch to clear it, a simple finish to extend Salop’s lead.

But Wyrley would prevent Town from keeping a clean sheet as a counter attack works out well for them and with a tucked away finish they manage to get themselves back a goal. Salop now re-taking control of the game which saw multiple chances being created, but none could be converted to extend the lead before the full-time whistle is blown.
